Getting Started
In Shopify
- You need admin access to your FreightExchange account and your Shopify store.

- Set up your store address as a location in Shopify.
In FreightExchange
- Log in or sign up to FreightExchange.
- Click the Subscriptions button on the top menu bar, add the eCommerce Plugin. See How to Subscribe to FreightExchange.
Connect FreightExchange and Shopify

- Go to Apps > Systems Integrations from the menu in the top right corner.
- Click + Add New and choose Shopify.
- Click Connect. This opens the FreightExchange app in the Shopify App Store.
- Click Add App and follow the steps to install it.
- You return to FreightExchange, where Shopify shows as connected with your store name.
- If you see an error, Third-Party Carrier-Calculated Shipping is not turned on yet.
How to configure your quoting & shipping
Go to Apps > Systems Integrations and click Configure.
Setting | What to choose |
|---|---|

Pickup location type | |

Delivery Tail Lift | Turn on if deliveries need a tail lift. Fees are added automatically. |
You can change these for any single shipment on the Quote page.
Set up your Standard Packaging
FreightExchange rates each order from the items in it. Add one entry per carton under Settings > Packaging. The Packaging ID must match the Shopify SKU. See How To Set Up Your Standard Packaging.
- One carton per product: one Standard Packaging entry with the same ID as the SKU. Delete any packagingids metafield on that product.
- More than one carton per product: in Shopify, create a product metafield called packagingids. List one Packaging ID per carton, separated by commas with no spaces, for example MAIN-1,MAIN-2.
- Optional products and accessories: give each its own SKU and Standard Packaging entry. Its carton is added when it is in the cart.
- Variants: create a Standard Packaging entry for each variant SKU, even when variants share the same size.
You can also add your Products. See How To Configure Your Products in FreightExchange.
Select the carrier at checkout
Configure Workflow Rules under Settings > Rules with your preferred carriers and other shipping rules.
Bring your own (BYO) carrier accounts
If you want to ship on your Bring Your Own (BYO) Carrier Accounts, configure these under Carriers & Accounts.
Each carrier uses API-Based Rates or a Manual Upload rate card. Each carrier needs a BYO Carrier add-on.
Set what your customers pay
Configure Sales Rates to set customer prices. This lets you offer free delivery to selected postcodes, charge for optional products, and set charges for regional and remote areas. Sales Rates need BYO rate management, which comes with a BYO Carrier add-on.
Ship from more than one location
- Add each warehouse to your Address Book.
- In Shopify, create a product metafield called originAddressId.
- Enter the FreightExchange Address ID for the warehouse that ships each product.
- If variants ship from different places, set it at variant level.
Check your setup
- Go to Apps > Systems Integrations. Your store shows as connected.
- Add products to a cart on your store and enter a delivery address at checkout. FreightExchange rates should show on the next screen.
- Place a test order. It should appear on the Quote page with all details completed.
Troubleshooting
- No rates at checkout? Ask Shopify support to confirm Third-Party Carrier-Calculated Shipping is on.
- Is another shipping app installed? Turn it off. Only FreightExchange can return freight rates at checkout.
- Rates look too high? Check your tax settings, product dimensions and any Shopify handling fees.
- Wrong carton count? Check the packagingids metafield has commas and no spaces, and every ID exists under Settings > Packaging.
- Multiple warehouses? Check each product has an originAddressId that matches your Address Book.
